India is set to compete against Sri Lanka in the men's cricket semi-final during the Asian Games 2026. This follows the abandonment of Sri Lanka's quarter-final match against Nepal, which was scheduled to take place in Nisshin, Japan, on Tuesday, as reported by Cricinfo.
Weather Disrupts Quarter-Final Matches
The quarter-final match was called off prior to the toss due to continuous rain in the region, which began several hours before the planned 9 am local start and showed no signs of stopping.
Sri Lanka advanced to the semi-finals based on their higher seeding in the ICC T20I rankings. Along with Sri Lanka, India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh entered the tournament as the four seeded teams.
India and Pakistan Progress to Semi-Finals
Led by Shreyas Iyer, India also secured a spot in the semi-finals after their quarter-final against Afghanistan was washed out on Monday. Their advancement was similarly due to their higher seeding. Pakistan also moved forward after their quarter-final against Hong Kong was abandoned due to rain.
Upcoming Semi-Final Matches
Sri Lanka, which faced elimination at the quarter-final stage in the 2022 Asian Games after losing to Afghanistan, will now challenge India for a chance to reach the final.
The other semi-final will feature Bangladesh against Pakistan, following the washout of Bangladesh's quarter-final against Malaysia later on Tuesday. Both semi-finals are set to take place on October 1, with Bangladesh facing Pakistan first, followed by India against Sri Lanka.
India's Quest for Gold
India aims to defend the gold medal they secured in the men's cricket event at the 2023 Asian Games held in Hangzhou. The gold was awarded to India after their final against Afghanistan was also washed out, with the higher-ranked team taking the title.
Women's Team Successfully Defends Title
The women's cricket team of India has already defended its title at the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya. Under the leadership of Harmanpreet Kaur, India triumphed over Sri Lanka by 147 runs in the final to secure the gold medal.
