India Supports Upcoming US-Russia Discussions on Ukraine Conflict
India's Stance on US-Russia Meeting
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has expressed its approval of the upcoming meeting between the United States and Russia, scheduled for August 15 in Alaska, aimed at addressing the ongoing Ukraine conflict. The MEA believes this dialogue could be a significant step towards resolving the war in Ukraine and fostering peace.
A spokesperson from the MEA highlighted the potential of this meeting to conclude the current hostilities in Ukraine and create opportunities for peace. He referenced Prime Minister Narendra Modi's statement that 'This is not an era of war.'
The spokesperson reiterated, 'This meeting holds the promise of bringing to an end the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and opening up the prospects for peace. As Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said on several occasions, 'This is not an era of war.'
India is prepared to support the efforts surrounding this summit, as stated by the spokesperson.
US President Donald Trump announced on Saturday that he will meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin on August 15, 2025, in Alaska. The primary focus of this meeting is expected to be on negotiating a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine.
In a post on his Truth Social account, Trump stated, 'The highly anticipated meeting between myself, as President of the United States of America, and President Vladimir Putin, of Russia, will take place next Friday, August 15, 2025, in the Great State of Alaska. Further details to follow. Thank you for your attention to this matter!'
During a previous event at the White House, where he signed the Armenia-Azerbaijan peace accord, Trump hinted at advancements in the Russia-Ukraine negotiations.
When asked about the progress of peace talks, Trump responded, 'We are getting very close to a deal. Working with European nations, who are terrific people and leaders, is a pleasure through NATO… In all fairness to President Zelensky, he is getting everything he needs, assuming we will get something done. I will be meeting very shortly with President Putin. It would have been sooner, but I guess there are security arrangements that unfortunately people have to make.'
'It’s very complicated. But we’re going to get some [territory] back, and we’re going to get some switched. There’ll be some swapping of territories to the betterment of both, but we’ll be talking about that either later or tomorrow,' he added.
