On January 19, 2026, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the President of the UAE, made a surprise visit to Delhi, where he met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This significant meeting addressed India's response to Pakistan's 'fighter jet diplomacy' and the potential formation of an 'Islamic NATO' involving Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey. During this encounter, both nations signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) to establish a strategic defense partnership, which is expected to evolve into a comprehensive framework agreement.

  • Strategic Defense Partnership: The focus will be on collaboration in the defense industry, technology transfer, joint development, cybersecurity, counter-terrorism, special operations, and interoperability. Regular military exercises and dialogues will be enhanced.
  • Trade Goals: The two countries aim to double bilateral trade to reach $200 billion (approximately ₹18 lakh crore) by 2032. Trade is already projected to surpass $100 billion in 2024-25.
  • Other Major Agreements: A $3 billion LNG deal (HPCL-ADNOC), cooperation in space (IN-SPACe and UAE Space Agency), civil nuclear projects (large reactors + SMRs), advancements in AI, and investments in Dholera SIR.
  • Firm Stance on Terrorism: Both nations condemned cross-border terrorism, terror financing, and money laundering, agreeing to enhance cooperation under the FATF framework.
