India Strengthens Commitment to Global Disaster Resilience at Geneva Platform

India's Commitment to Disaster Resilience
New Delhi, June 4: At the 8th Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction held in Geneva, India has reiterated its dedication to enhancing global disaster resilience initiatives.
During the event, Dr. P K Mishra, Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister, engaged in fruitful discussions with Stine Renate Håheim, Norway's Deputy Minister for International Development, stressing the significance of collaborative efforts in mitigating disaster risks.
Dr. Mishra also took part in the opening ceremony of the platform, showcasing India's proactive stance on disaster preparedness and resilience, and reaffirming the nation's commitment to fostering partnerships aimed at creating a safer and more resilient future.
To enhance its disaster resilience capabilities, India has established the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and State Disaster Management Authorities (SDMAs) under the Disaster Management Act of 2005, ensuring effective disaster response.
The Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction, organized by the United Nations, serves as the primary global forum for evaluating and discussing advancements in disaster risk reduction strategies.
The ongoing eighth session of the Global Platform (GP2025) is being hosted by the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) in Geneva, Switzerland.
This event aims to review the progress made in implementing the recommendations from the Political Declaration adopted by the UN General Assembly in May 2023 and to provide actionable guidance for further implementation.
GP2025 presents an opportunity for all stakeholders to urgently recommit to accelerating efforts in disaster risk reduction, contributing to sustainable development goals.
The agenda for GP2025 will be shaped by the Sendai Framework, focusing on its objectives, four key action priorities, and seven global targets, along with the main priorities identified in the midterm review of the Sendai Framework and the GP2022 Co-Chairs' Summary, as well as upcoming Regional Platform meetings in 2024.
The next Global Platform will mark a significant milestone between the High-Level meeting on the midterm review of the Sendai Framework (May 2023) and the final five years leading up to the conclusion of the Sendai Framework.
