India Sets Ambitious Target for Sports Goods Exports
India's Vision for Sports Goods Exports
India is on a mission to boost its sports goods exports from around Rs 3,000 crore to an impressive Rs 80,000 crore. Sports Secretary Hari Ranjan Rao emphasized the need for manufacturers to think big and embrace innovation during his address at the 4th India Sporting Goods Fair (ISGF) 2026.
The event, which commenced recently, aims to position India as a leading global hub for the manufacturing and export of sports goods.
'Dream Big' for Global Expansion
Rao described this period as a pivotal moment for the sports goods industry in India. He stated, "To achieve the leap from Rs 3,000 crore to Rs 80,000 crore, manufacturers must scale up their operations nearly 25 times. Without ambitious goals, success will remain elusive."
He urged manufacturers to aggressively pursue global expansion and adopt innovative strategies, highlighting the importance of youth and emerging entrepreneurs in driving this growth.
Government's Commitment to the Sector
Reiterating the government's dedication, Rao mentioned that Rs 500 crore has been earmarked in the Union Budget for the sports goods sector.
"We encourage new manufacturers to enter this field. The industry should seek joint ventures and international partnerships, and the Ministry is ready to assist in these endeavors," he added.
Upcoming Manufacturing Scheme
Vineel Krishna, Joint Secretary (Sports), expressed the government's ambitious plans to enhance the sports goods manufacturing sector to satisfy domestic needs and boost exports.
"We anticipate launching a sports goods manufacturing scheme in the coming months, pending necessary approvals," he stated.
He also noted the growing interest from state governments in fostering the expansion of sports goods manufacturing across the country.
