India Set to Receive Crude Oil Shipment from Iran After Seven-Year Hiatus
Crude Oil Shipment from Iran
This week, India is expected to receive a shipment of crude oil from Iran. The cargo is being redirected to Indian shores after initially being destined for China. This marks the end of a seven-year hiatus in imports from Tehran. The United States has temporarily lifted sanctions on Iranian oil to stabilize global supply disruptions. According to shipping data from the London Stock Exchange Group and Kepler, a large crude oil tanker named Jaya, flagged under Curaçao, has been chartered to deliver Iranian crude to India's eastern coast. The vessel's route change indicates a shift, as it was previously heading towards Southeast Asian waters, reportedly with China as its potential destination, before altering its course towards India.
Indian Oil Corporation's Involvement
The shipment has been purchased by the Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), which has not yet provided an official comment on this development. In another sign of improving resource supply, another tanker, named Jordan, is also signaling its intent to offload oil in India, as reported by a news agency. The last time India imported Iranian oil was in May 2019, when U.S. sanctions forced refiners to halt purchases, despite Tehran being a major supplier offering favorable terms. Since then, Indian refiners have largely relied on alternative sources, including Western Asian producers and the United States.
Impact of Regional Conflicts
This recent development comes amid ongoing conflicts in West Asia, which have disrupted shipments from critical maritime routes like the Strait of Hormuz. The supply crunch has prompted a shift in policy flexibility in Washington and renewed interest in purchasing among Indian refiners.
Resumption of Purchases
Although this shipment follows a ceasefire agreement between the U.S. and Iran, the purchase was made earlier this month. Last week, the oil ministry confirmed that domestic refiners had begun purchasing crude oil from Iran amid changing circumstances. The ministry also indicated that there are currently no barriers to the payment mechanisms for such transactions, suggesting that the easing of temporary sanctions is facilitating smooth trade. Experts believe that the re-inclusion of Iranian crude oil in India's imports could provide relief to refiners grappling with volatile prices and supply uncertainties.
