India Set to Host 2026 BWF World Badminton Championships: A Milestone for Sports
A Historic Moment for Indian Sports: Trupti Murgunde
Trupti Murgunde, a former national champion and recipient of the Dhyan Chand Award, expressed her pride in India's upcoming hosting of the 2026 BWF World Badminton Championships. Reflecting on the 2009 event held in Hyderabad, she noted how it showcased India's rising prominence in the badminton arena, with even Chinese players beginning to recognize Indian talents like Saina Nehwal. The Championships are scheduled from August 17 to August 23 at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium, featuring over 55 countries and nearly 800 athletes. This marks the event's return to India after 17 years and its inaugural occurrence in the national capital. Murgunde stated, "This is a proud moment for the badminton community and the entire Indian sports fraternity. I participated in the 2009 edition, and I remember how Chinese players were curious about our stars, which was a significant shift from the past."
Preparations Underway for the Prestigious Championships
Sanjay Mishra, General Secretary of the Badminton Association of India (BAI), described the 2026 BWF World Badminton Championships as a prestigious event, with preparations progressing well after a successful test event. He acknowledged the efforts of the Sports Ministry and SAI in enhancing the venue. The tournament will see participation from 56 countries, with 11 Indian players qualifying. Mishra remarked, "This is a significant event, and we are pleased with our preparations. After conducting a test event, we identified areas for improvement. In about 15 to 20 days, we will showcase the upgraded venue. We have 461 players and around 150 to 160 officials participating, with 11 Indian entries qualifying for the Championships."
World's Best Players Expected at the Championships
BAI Joint Secretary Omar Rashid highlighted the scale of the event, stating that the BWF World Badminton Championships in New Delhi will attract top players from around the globe. He noted that over 400 players, along with numerous support staff and officials, are anticipated to attend the week-long competition. Rashid mentioned, "The BAI previously organized this event in Hyderabad about seven to ten years ago. Now, we are excited to host it in New Delhi, with many elite players expected to participate. The event will run from August 17 to August 23, culminating in the finals on the last day."
Home Advantage for Indian Players, Says Gopichand
Pullela Gopichand, the chief coach of the Indian national badminton team, welcomed the opportunity to host the 2026 BWF World Badminton Championships, calling it a pivotal moment for the sport. He emphasized the importance of the Championships and the upcoming Asian Games for Indian badminton, expressing optimism that the home advantage would enhance India's chances of success. Gopichand stated, "I am thrilled that Delhi is hosting this prestigious event. The next two months will be crucial for Indian badminton, especially with strong medal contenders like Sindhu, Lakshya, Ayush, Satwik, and Chirag. The support from home crowds will undoubtedly benefit our players."
PV Sindhu to Lead Indian Contingent
Two-time Olympic medalist and former world champion PV Sindhu will lead a 10-member Indian team at the 2026 BWF World Championships. India will have two direct entrants in each category. In men's singles, Lakshya Sen and Ayush Shetty have qualified, while Sindhu will be joined by rising star Unnati Hooda in women's singles. The men's doubles team of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, ranked fourth overall, will represent India, alongside Hariharan Amsakarunan and MR Arjun. In women's doubles, Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand, ranked 30th, will compete with Kavipriya Selvam and Simran Singhi. In mixed doubles, Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto qualified 21st, while Rohan Kapoor and Ruthvika Shivani Gadde secured the second spot for India.
Reserve Players Include Championship Medallists
Several Indian players, including world championship medallists Kidambi Srikanth and HS Prannoy, are listed as reserves for the tournament.
