India Reviews Energy Security Amid Ongoing Middle East Conflict
Prime Minister Modi Leads Critical Energy Security Meeting
On Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a significant meeting in New Delhi to assess India's stance amidst the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. The primary focus of this gathering was to ensure the uninterrupted supply of essential commodities such as petrol, crude oil, gas, electricity, and food across the nation.
Key Government Officials Attend Meeting
The meeting, held at the Prime Minister's residence, included key cabinet members such as Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar. The government reassured that it is taking all necessary measures to safeguard the country's energy security and protect the interests of the public while monitoring global conditions.
Measures to Alleviate Gas and Fuel Shortages
To stabilize the supply of domestic LPG cylinders, the government has implemented several major decisions. There has been a noticeable decrease in panic bookings. Additionally, the government has increased the commercial gas quota for states, prioritizing hospitals and educational institutions.
Furthermore, there is an emphasis on expediting the provision of new piped gas connections for both domestic and commercial users. To combat black marketing and hoarding of gas, continuous raids are being conducted nationwide. In a positive development, a large vessel carrying cooking gas from Texas has arrived at the Mangalore port, which is expected to enhance supply.
Rising Tensions in Maritime Routes
This review meeting took place at a time when tensions are escalating in critical trade routes like the Strait of Hormuz due to the ongoing war. Since the death of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on February 28, conflicts in the region have intensified, impacting international markets.
Industrial diesel prices have surged by 25%, reaching ₹109.59 per liter. However, the Ministry of Shipping has confirmed that all 22 Indian vessels and 611 sailors in the Gulf region are safe. The government reiterated that the safety of the Indian community and the country's economic stability remain their top priorities.
