Introduction to the Negev Light Machine Gun Deal

Recently, it was reported that a leading Israeli arms manufacturer has delivered the first batch of Negev light machine guns to India. This transaction aligns with the Make in India initiative, which has been a focal point for Israel over the past two to two and a half years, especially amidst its ongoing conflicts with Hamas and Iran. Despite these challenges, the arms deal between India and Israel has continued, primarily due to its connection to the Make in India program. The Indian Army and the Indian Air Force have long sought to replace their outdated machine guns, and under this initiative, India has received its first shipment of 2,000 Negev 7.62 * 51 LMGs, part of a substantial order totaling 41,000 units. Notably, these weapons are being manufactured in India, showcasing a successful technology transfer.

Why India Chose the Negev Machine Gun

You might wonder why India opted for this specific firearm. The Negev boasts unique specifications; imagine a machine gun capable of demolishing walls while being lightweight enough for soldiers to carry during mountainous operations. Such firearms are rare globally, and given its impressive features, India decided to partner with Israel for this deal. The Negev is among the lightest in its category, utilizing 7.62 * 51 mm NATO standard ammunition, which provides significant penetration power. This weapon is powerful enough to penetrate not just human targets but also sturdy brick walls, sandbag bunkers, and lightly armored vehicles. It includes a switch that allows for semi-automatic precision shooting, akin to a sniper's accuracy, or can be switched to fully automatic mode to unleash hundreds of rounds per minute against enemy forces.

Advanced Features of the Negev Machine Gun

Warfare does not always occur in daylight. The Negev is equipped with tritium night sights, specialized lenses that illuminate in darkness without the need for batteries or external light, aiding soldiers in targeting. This feature likely influenced India's decision to select this machine gun for its armed forces, especially as it is being produced under the Make in India initiative. Additionally, we mentioned earlier the involvement of the Adani Group in the PLR system. It's worth noting that PLR is India's first private company dedicated to manufacturing small arms and ammunition, established as a joint venture between the Israeli firm IWI and the Adani Group. Historically, the Indian government relied on its ordnance factories, which often faced delays and quality control issues.
