India Shifts Focus to Test Cricket
After the IPL 2026 season, Team India is set to return to the traditional format with a One-Off Test match against Afghanistan, commencing on June 6 at the New PCA Stadium in Mullanpur, New Chandigarh.
The selected players for this Test gathered in Mumbai for training after completing their IPL commitments. Their first practice session took place on June 3, 2026, at the PCA Stadium complex.
Following five months of T20 cricket, including a T20I series against New Zealand and the T20 World Cup 2026, the team, under the leadership of Shubman Gill, is now focusing on the longer format, with head coach Gautam Gambhir leading an intensive net session.

The upcoming One-Off Test between India and Afghanistan will not contribute to the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 points table. This match is classified as an official bilateral Test rather than part of the WTC league.
The primary reason for this exclusion is that Afghanistan, despite being a Full Member of the ICC, is not among the nine nations participating in the current WTC cycle. The WTC is limited to the top nine-ranked Test-playing countries, meaning any Test involving Afghanistan is treated as an independent series without championship points.
Currently, Afghanistan ranks 12th in the ICC Test team rankings, placing them outside the elite group of nine nations competing in the WTC cycle, which includes India, Australia, South Africa, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, England, West Indies, Bangladesh, and New Zealand.
ICC Regulations and Test Series Criteria
Another factor for the One-Off Test's exclusion from the WTC cycle is the ICC's requirement that any Test series must consist of at least two matches to be eligible for WTC points.
Since the India vs Afghanistan fixture is a single-Test encounter, it does not meet the criteria for championship points, regardless of the teams involved. Thus, any result from this match will not affect India's WTC points tally.
Importance of the One-Off Test for Team India
Despite not being part of the WTC cycle, the One-Off Test against Afghanistan is crucial for the Shubman Gill-led team. It offers an opportunity to tackle key transitions and tactical challenges as the players shift back from T20 to Test cricket.
