New Delhi: On Thursday, India conveyed its heartfelt condolences to the Thai government and its citizens following a tragic train accident that resulted in numerous casualties and injuries in northeastern Thailand.

Local officials reported that the death toll from a crane collapse, which caused a passenger train to derail in Nakhon Ratchasima province, has tragically reached 32, with around 70 individuals sustaining injuries.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) expressed its sorrow on social media, stating, "We are profoundly saddened by the tragic loss of lives and injuries in the train accident in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand, on January 14, 2026. Our deepest sympathies go out to the people and government of Thailand during this difficult time. We wish a speedy recovery to all those injured and extend our condolences to the affected families."

The incident occurred on Wednesday morning when a construction crane, part of a high-speed rail bridge project, collapsed onto a train traveling from Bangkok to Ubon Ratchathani province.

During a press conference, Nakhon Ratchasima Governor Chaiwat Chuenkosum indicated that the State Railway of Thailand anticipates it will take about a week to clear the wreckage and restore normal train operations, while a thorough investigation into the accident's cause is ongoing.

Thai Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn has directed relevant agencies to carry out a transparent and thorough investigation to ascertain the cause and prevent future occurrences, as reported by a news agency.

As per local media, the main contractor for the railway section involved is Italian-Thai Development PLC, which has publicly stated its commitment to take full responsibility for compensation and medical care related to the incident.
