New Delhi, July 13: On Monday, India marked a day of national mourning, with the national flag at the Rashtrapati Bhavan and various other locations in Delhi flying at half-mast in honor of the late Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani, the former Amir of Qatar.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) shared images on social media showing the flags at half-mast across the nation.
Sheikh Hamad passed away at the age of 74 on Sunday, prompting the Indian government to declare a day of mourning.
In a statement, the MEA announced, "The Government of India has declared one-day national mourning on July 13, 2026, to honor His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani, who passed away today. The National Flag will be flown at half-mast across all buildings where it is regularly displayed, and there will be no official entertainment on this day."
Kiren Rijiju, the Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and Minority Affairs, is expected to travel to Qatar soon to express condolences on behalf of the Indian government, as stated by the MEA.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his sorrow over Sheikh Hamad's passing, referring to him as a "visionary leader" and a "true friend".
He extended his condolences to Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the royal family, and the people of Qatar.
"We deeply mourn the loss of Father Amir of the State of Qatar, HH Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani. A visionary leader who guided Qatar towards significant development and prosperity, I remember him as a true friend whom I had the privilege to meet during my visit to Qatar in February 2024. I offer my heartfelt condolences to the Amir of Qatar, HH Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, and the entire royal family and people of Qatar. May his soul rest in eternal peace," PM Modi posted on social media.
Sheikh Hamad ruled Qatar from 1995 until 2013, when he transferred power to his son, Sheikh Tamim. His leadership was marked by substantial economic, social, and cultural advancements, enhancing Qatar's standing in both the Arab world and the international community, as noted by the Amiri Diwan.
