India's Strong Start in Shooting at Asian Games
India commenced its shooting journey at the 20th Asian Games with a remarkable performance, securing two silver medals on the very first day at the Aichi Prefectural General Shooting Gallery. Olympian Elavenil Valarivan earned a silver in the Women's 10m Air Rifle individual final, while she, along with Sonam Uttam Maskar and Vidarsa Kochalumkal Vinod, clinched another silver in the team event, as reported in an official release.
Elavenil's Individual Silver Medal Performance
In a thrilling individual final, Elavenil showcased her skills by consistently scoring in the high 10s, finishing with a total of 252.4 points. She narrowly missed the gold, finishing just 0.6 points behind Japan's Hinata Taichi, who set a new Asian Games record with a score of 253.0. South Korea's Ban Hyojin, the Olympic champion, secured the bronze with a score of 230.4. Additionally, India's Sonam Uttam Maskar participated in the final, finishing sixth with an elimination score of 167.0.
Team Silver Medal Achievement
Earlier in the day, the Indian team marked the nation's first medal at the Games through the team event, which is determined by the aggregate qualification scores. India achieved a total of 1898.0 points, earning them second place. Sonam led the team with an impressive score of 634.1, finishing third in the qualifiers, while Elavenil followed in seventh with 633.5. Vidarsa contributed a solid score of 630.4, placing 12th individually, which secured the team silver for India. China took home the gold with a total of 1904.2, led by Wang Zifei (636.8), Han Jiayu (633.8), and Du Yuchen (633.6). Japan, the host nation, claimed the bronze with an aggregate of 1897.1.
