Monitoring Developments on Tariffs

New Delhi: On Friday, India announced that it is attentively observing the situation regarding a proposed US legislation that could impose tariffs as high as 500% on nations importing Russian crude oil.

Among the few countries significantly purchasing crude oil from Russia are India and China.

US Senator Lindsey Graham, who introduced the bill, stated earlier this week that President Donald Trump has approved the proposed legislation.

"We are aware of the proposed bill and are closely monitoring the developments," said Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson for the External Affairs Ministry, during a weekly media briefing. "Our stance on energy sourcing is well established."

"In this context, we are guided by the changing dynamics of the global market and the necessity to secure affordable energy from various sources to fulfill the energy security requirements of our 1.4 billion citizens," he added.
