Safety Alert for Indian Nationals in Maritime Conflict Areas

New Delhi: On Sunday, the Indian government urged its citizens to thoroughly evaluate the security conditions before accepting employment in maritime zones affected by conflict, particularly in the Black Sea area.

In an official advisory, the government expressed serious concerns regarding the security landscape in and around the Black Sea, highlighting that it remains extremely unstable due to ongoing hostilities.

This warning follows the recent tragic incidents where five Indian nationals lost their lives in attacks on two commercial ships within the Black Sea region over the past week.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) cautioned Indian citizens planning to work on commercial vessels in or passing through these conflict-impacted waters to carefully consider the existing security threats before agreeing to such positions.

The MEA reiterated that the situation in the Black Sea and surrounding maritime areas is highly precarious due to the ongoing conflict.

It noted that commercial vessels navigating these waters are exposed to considerable security threats, including missile and drone strikes.

Since April, there has been a notable rise in incidents involving commercial vessels, culminating in the unfortunate deaths of five Indians.

The MEA advised individuals who opt for such employment to exercise extreme caution and adhere to recommended safety measures.

It encouraged those seeking jobs to gather detailed information from employers, recruitment agencies, and ship operators about the vessel's planned route, ports of call, security protocols, insurance coverage, and emergency response strategies.

Furthermore, it emphasized the importance of ensuring that employment terms align with international maritime standards, providing adequate medical care, evacuation, repatriation, and compensation in emergencies.

The MEA also urged individuals to keep their families informed about their travel plans and maintain regular communication.

For consular assistance, Indian nationals were advised to reach out to the Embassy of India or the nearest Consulates in the region.
