India's Import Ban on Pakistan: Key Details

New Delhi: The Indian government has enacted an immediate ban on the direct and indirect import of all goods from Pakistan, as stated in a recent notification from the commerce ministry.

This measure has been incorporated into the Foreign Trade Policy (FTP) 2023, which aims to "prohibit direct or indirect import or transit of all goods originating in or exported from Pakistan until further notice," according to the notification issued on May 2.

The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) emphasized that this restriction is being implemented for reasons of national security and public policy.

Any exceptions to this ban will necessitate approval from the Government of India.

The FTP now includes a section titled "prohibition on import from Pakistan," which clearly states that all imports or transits of goods from Pakistan are prohibited immediately, regardless of their import status.

This decision comes in the wake of a tragic terror attack in Pahalgam, where 26 individuals, primarily tourists, lost their lives on April 22.
