India Faces Mixed Results on Day 2 of BWF World Championships 2026
Mixed Fortunes for India on Day 2
A thrilling moment unfolded during Day 2 of the BWF World Championships 2026 when a rare Golden Point at 29-29 highlighted the action. Unfortunately, India's Ashith Surya and Amrutha Pramuthesh were unable to seize their chances, resulting in an opening-round loss in mixed doubles at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium on Tuesday. The Indian duo, who entered the competition as last-minute reserves, faced a tough match that saw the second game reach a nail-biting 29-29, with the first team to score the 30th point winning the game, as reported by ESPN. Despite having opportunities in the final game, they could not capitalize, ending their campaign. Nonetheless, the pair cherished the experience of competing in a World Championship on home turf after leaving a state championship midway to participate in the event in Delhi. This match also marked one of the last instances of the traditional 21-point scoring system reaching 30, as badminton will transition to a 15-point format next season.
India faced another setback in mixed doubles when Ruthvika Gadde and Rohan Kapoor were narrowly defeated by Canada's Crystal Lai and Jonathan Lai, with scores of 22-20, 19-21, 17-21 in a tightly contested Round of 64 match.
On a brighter note, Unnati Hooda brought some relief to the Indian contingent in women's singles, overcoming Myanmar's Thet Htar Thuzar with scores of 22-20, 21-16 to advance to the next round.
Flawless Opening Day
India had a perfect start on Monday, with all five participants winning their respective Round of 64 matches. The standout performance came from Ayush Shetty, who delivered a stunning upset against top seed and defending champion Shi Yu Qi of China, winning 21-14, 13-21, 21-19.
Five-time world medallist PV Sindhu also progressed with a convincing 21-7, 21-11 victory over Ireland's Sophia Noble. Additionally, the doubles teams of Treesa Jolly-Gayatri Gopichand, Kavipriya Selvam-Simran Singhi, and MR Arjun-Hariharan Amsakarunan also advanced.
