Strengthening Domestic Supply Chains for Critical Minerals

New Delhi, March 26: The Indian government is intensifying its initiatives to explore essential minerals, foster startups in the mining sector, and establish robust domestic supply chains to lessen reliance on imports, stated Minister of State Dr. Jitendra Singh on Thursday.

During a meeting of the governing body of the National Mineral Exploration and Development Trust (NMET), the minister emphasized the urgency of accelerating exploration efforts, particularly for vital minerals like lithium, which are essential for modern technologies.

“India is actively working to enhance the exploration of critical minerals, develop a startup-centric mining ecosystem, and create strong domestic value chains to minimize import reliance,” Singh remarked.

He pointed out the necessity for India to align its exploration strategies with both global market demands and its strategic interests.

Examples of ongoing projects include the Siwana belt in Rajasthan and the Salal–Haimna block in Jammu and Kashmir, with plans to broaden these initiatives to additional promising regions.

“It is crucial for India to foster a supportive environment for domestic companies and startups to engage in the mining and critical minerals sector,” the minister asserted.

He referenced the achievements of the biotechnology startup ecosystem, suggesting that similar institutional backing, targeted incentives, and support mechanisms could drive innovation in mining technologies and exploration techniques.

“Enhancing the capabilities of private exploration firms is vital for the sector's sustainable growth,” Dr. Singh added.

The government is also prioritizing the improvement of project timelines by streamlining approval processes and tackling challenges like forest clearances, which frequently hinder exploration activities.

According to the minister, effective coordination among various authorities will be essential to sustain progress.

“Accelerated approvals, improved procurement systems, and timely pre-exploration clearances are critical to maintaining momentum in exploration efforts,” he highlighted.

“To reduce import dependency, it is imperative to develop comprehensive domestic supply chains, including processing and value addition,” he concluded.
