India solidified their dominance in the one-off Test match against Afghanistan by enforcing the follow-on after dismissing the visitors for just 152 runs in their first innings. The standout performer was debutant left-arm spinner Manav Suthar, who achieved an impressive six-wicket haul during the opening session of Day 3 on Monday. By lunch, Afghanistan had reached 18 runs without losing a wicket in their second innings, with openers Sediqullah Atal and Abdul Malik showing an aggressive batting style. However, they still trail India by a significant margin of 394 runs.
Suthar's Impressive Debut Performance
Starting the day at 113 for 5, Afghanistan's chances of reducing the deficit were quickly extinguished as India's bowlers efficiently wrapped up their innings in just 58.4 overs. Fast bowler Prasidh Krishna struck early by dismissing Azmatullah Omarzai without adding to his overnight score. The morning session was dominated by Suthar, who delivered a remarkable performance on his Test debut. The 23-year-old spinner took the wicket of Sharafuddin Ashraf for 11 runs and then dismissed Rahmat Shah, who was Afghanistan's top scorer with 60 runs off 135 balls, marking Suthar's first five-wicket haul in Test cricket.
Suthar's Record-Breaking Figures
Suthar continued to challenge the Afghan batsmen with his precision and control, trapping Mohammad Saleem Safi LBW and finishing with exceptional figures of 6 for 33 from 22 overs. Prasidh Krishna contributed with three wickets, while Washington Sundar claimed the final wicket of Ziaur Rahman Sharifi, limiting Afghanistan's first innings. Suthar's performance not only secured India a commanding first-innings lead of 412 runs but also led captain Shubman Gill to enforce the follow-on. His figures are the second-best by an Indian bowler on Test debut, following Narendra Hirwani's 8 for 61 against the West Indies in 1988. He is now the 10th Indian bowler and the seventh spinner to achieve a five-wicket haul in his first Test match.
Suthar's Journey to International Cricket
The all-rounder from Rajasthan entered this match following a series of impressive domestic performances. In 29 first-class matches, he has taken 129 wickets at an average of 25.76 and scored 1,026 runs. His recent achievements include an eight-wicket haul in the Ranji Trophy and a strong performance against Australia A, which ultimately earned him this long-awaited chance on the international stage.
