India Criticizes Pakistan's Defence Minister for Insulting PM Modi's Award

India has strongly rebuked Pakistan's Defence Minister Khawaja Asif for his derogatory remarks regarding Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent award from Seychelles. Labeling Asif as 'mentally unstable', Indian officials criticized his lack of understanding and frivolous comments. The controversy arose after Asif questioned the legitimacy of the honor, which was awarded for PM Modi's commitment to environmental conservation. India's Strong Response to Khawaja Asif's Remarks

On Saturday, India condemned the comments made by Pakistan's Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, labeling him as 'mentally unstable' following his disparaging remarks about Prime Minister Narendra Modi receiving the 'Guardian of the Blue Horizon' Presidential Distinction from Seychelles. Officials from the Indian government stated that Asif's mental state is widely recognized, suggesting that his current role reflects poorly on Pakistan. They criticized him for making frivolous comments on topics he clearly lacks understanding of, emphasizing that envy often leads to misguided motivations, especially from someone known for hate speech.

The backlash from India came after Asif questioned the authenticity of the honor awarded to PM Modi during his visit to Seychelles, calling it an 'engineered recognition' and claiming it was hastily arranged. He pointed to typographical errors in an earlier draft of the citation, branding the situation as 'the most embarrassing story ever.' However, the Seychelles government firmly rejected these claims, clarifying that the award was established under their National Honours Act and was officially approved prior to PM Modi's visit. They stated that the document circulating online was merely an internal draft that had been mistakenly shared before final edits were made, assuring that the final version presented during the ceremony contained no errors.

Asif's controversial statements have previously led to significant diplomatic challenges for Pakistan, as he has made unverified claims and engaged in confrontational rhetoric. PM Modi was honored for his dedication to environmental conservation and for supporting the goals of Small Island Developing States, becoming the first recipient of this award after Seychelles updated its national honors system. In accepting the award, PM Modi expressed gratitude to the people and government of Seychelles, dedicating the honor to nations facing climate change challenges.

Previous Controversies Surrounding Khawaja Asif

In November 2025, Khawaja Asif faced criticism from Afghanistan's Taliban-led government, with Noorullah Noori, the Minister of Borders and Tribal Affairs, labeling him as 'mentally ill' due to his threats against Afghanistan. Noori highlighted the historical context of conflicts involving Pakistan, urging a judgment based on past actions.

Asif has also faced embarrassment for making unfounded claims, such as asserting that Pakistani forces shot down five Indian jets during an interview, only to fail to provide any credible evidence when challenged, stating, 'It's all over social media.' Furthermore, in an international interview, he admitted that Pakistan has a long history of supporting militant groups, essentially doing the 'dirty work' for the US and the West for over thirty years.
