India Clinches Gold in Men's Cricket at 2026 Asian Games
Historic Victory for Indian Men's Cricket Team
On Saturday, Mithun Manhas, the President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), praised the Indian men's cricket team for their remarkable achievement of winning the gold medal at the 2026 Asian Games. The team triumphed over their long-time rivals, Pakistan, showcasing their skill and composure under pressure. This victory marks a historic double gold for India in cricket, following the women's team's earlier success. The men's team secured the gold by defeating Pakistan by 19 runs, thanks to outstanding performances from players like Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Verma, and Axar Patel.
'Outstanding Performance in a High-Stakes Final'
After the match, Manhas spoke to the media, calling the team the best of the tournament. He highlighted their impressive performance in the final, stating, "They are undoubtedly the best team in the tournament; we have previously won this title nine times and are the defending champions. Their display this time is commendable. They overcame Pakistan, although I believe the competition level has diminished. The way our team manages high-pressure situations is unmatched in the country. Today is a day of celebration for the entire nation. I also want to express my gratitude to Jay Shah for his significant contributions to building this team, including the women's team, which also won the World Cup."
Match Summary
India chose to bat first after winning the toss. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi made a brief impact with 15 runs off nine balls, but it was Abhishek Sharma who stole the show with a blistering 61 runs from 28 balls, hitting three fours and seven sixes. Ishan Kishan (20) and captain Shreyas Iyer (21) provided stability, paving the way for Tilak Verma, who scored an unbeaten 51 off 22 balls, and Shivam Dube, who contributed 27 not out off 15 balls. Together, they helped India reach a total of 211/6, with a crucial 62-run partnership for the sixth wicket.
In response, Pakistan struggled early, finding themselves at 39/3. However, Hasan Nawaz fought valiantly, scoring 96 runs off 51 balls, including five fours and seven sixes. Ultimately, Pakistan finished their innings at 192/6. Axar Patel and Washington Sundar both delivered impressive bowling performances, with Sundar taking 2 wickets for 29 runs, while Shivam Dube also claimed 2 wickets for 33 runs.
Coach Laxman Acknowledges Team's Resilience
Following the victory, stand-in coach VVS Laxman expressed pride in securing back-to-back gold medals after their 2022 Hangzhou win. He credited the players for their dedication and focus, despite facing challenging weather and limited practice facilities.
Laxman remarked on the difficulties encountered since arriving in Japan, stating, "It was quite challenging as rain followed us from Tokyo to the venue here. However, the team performed exceptionally well, and I am very pleased with the outcome." He noted the lack of practice sessions due to adverse conditions but praised the team for maximizing their indoor training opportunities.
"We had minimal practice sessions and preparation, and the facilities were limited due to the weather. Yet, I felt that everyone was mentally engaged, and even during indoor sessions, they made the most of their time. This is what is expected at the highest level: the ability to prepare effectively, regardless of the circumstances, ensuring they represent the country with intensity," he added.
