India's Position on Asia Cup 2025 Matches

The future of the Asia Cup 2025 was uncertain until recently, but the Indian government has now clarified its position regarding cricket matches with Pakistan. Unlike ICC tournaments, the Asia Cup is organized under the Asian Cricket Council. Relations between India and Pakistan had deteriorated significantly following the Pahalgam terrorist attack and Operation Sindoor. Speculations arose about the possibility of India and Pakistan facing off in the Asia Cup.

When the topic of a match between India and Pakistan in the Asia Cup was raised, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) issued a statement indicating that any match against Pakistan would require approval from the Indian government. In Parliament, Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur confirmed that India would continue to participate in international tournaments involving Pakistan. He also mentioned that a proposal for the National Sports Administration Bill would be introduced soon.

Anurag Thakur stated, 'Our position is clear. Whether it’s cricket, hockey, or any other sport, we have no issues playing in international tournaments with Pakistan. However, regarding bilateral series, I believe the government's stance is well-known to everyone.'

Additionally, it has been reported that the Asia Cup 2025 was initially set to feature eight teams, but now only six teams are expected to participate. Oman and Hong Kong had qualified for the Asia Cup, but due to scheduling and logistical challenges, they may not compete in the tournament.
