New Delhi, June 5: Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced on Friday that India has reached a significant milestone with the designation of the Jai Prakash Narayan Bird Sanctuary (Surha Tal) in Ballia, Uttar Pradesh, as the nation’s 100th Ramsar site.

This wetland is noted for its rich avifaunal diversity, attracting numerous migratory and resident bird species.

In a post on the social media platform X, PM Modi expressed his delight, stating, “A century of Ramsar sites! I am pleased to share that the Jai Prakash Narayan Bird Sanctuary (Surha Tal) in Ballia, Uttar Pradesh, has been recognized as India’s 100th Ramsar site. This wetland is abundant in avifaunal biodiversity, drawing various migratory and resident birds.”

He emphasized that this achievement reflects India’s strong dedication to environmental protection, particularly concerning wetlands.

“India’s steadfast commitment to safeguarding our natural environment, especially wetlands, is evident in this accomplishment. Over the years, initiatives to conserve and restore wetlands have been enhanced through increased community involvement, scientific research, innovation, and awareness campaigns. These efforts are crucial for preserving biodiversity, maintaining ecological balance, and fostering a greener future for generations to come,” PM Modi remarked.

Earlier in the day, on World Environment Day, PM Modi reiterated India’s pledge to create a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable future, guided by the principle of “One Earth, One Family, One Future” and inspired by the Mission LiFE initiative.

World Environment Day, celebrated annually on June 5, aims to raise awareness about environmental issues and motivate action to protect the planet. Organized by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), it has become one of the largest global platforms for environmental advocacy and public engagement.

The inception of World Environment Day dates back to the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment held in Stockholm, Sweden, in 1972, which marked a pivotal moment in international environmental governance by prioritizing ecological concerns in global policymaking.

Following this conference, the United Nations officially designated June 5 as World Environment Day, with the inaugural observance occurring in 1973.

This day serves as a crucial reminder of the environmental challenges the world faces today, including climate change, pollution, biodiversity loss, and the depletion of natural resources. It encourages individuals, communities, businesses, and governments to adopt sustainable practices and contribute to environmental protection.

Over the years, World Environment Day has transformed into a global movement involving over 150 countries. Activities such as tree-planting campaigns, beach clean-ups, educational initiatives, and policy measures are organized worldwide. Each year, a host country is chosen, and a specific theme highlights a pressing environmental issue.

While governments and organizations play a vital role in environmental conservation, individual actions are equally significant. Simple steps like reducing waste, conserving water, using public transport, planting trees, and embracing sustainable lifestyles can collectively lead to meaningful change.
