India Celebrates Historic Para-Athletics Success at Glasgow 2026
Historic Achievements at the Commonwealth Games
The head coach of the para-athletics team for Glasgow 2026, Satyanarayana Shimoga, praised the Indian government's backing and the positive influence of social and print media for inspiring the nation's para-athletes. India marked a remarkable achievement on Day 7 of the Commonwealth Games, with Dilip Mahadu Gavit clinching the gold medal in the men's T47 100m, setting a new Commonwealth Games record of 10.71 seconds. Mohammed Basil Morssinganakth followed closely, securing silver with a time of 10.83 seconds, resulting in an extraordinary one-two finish for India.
Coach Highlights Support and Strategy
In a reflection on this success, Satyanarayana remarked, "The motivation from the Government of India, along with support from social media and print media, has been pivotal for my athletes. Dilip transitioned from the 400 meters to the 100 meters under my guidance, as I recognized his potential in this shorter sprint. Basil, competing in his first major event, has a promising future ahead. We are eagerly anticipating the shot put event on August 1, where we aim to secure more medals."
Team Manager's Insights on Expectations
Rahul Swami, the general manager of Team India, stated that the results were anticipated within the team, emphasizing their expectations for a strong medal tally in Glasgow. "While it may seem surprising, our coaches, physiotherapists, and technical staff had foreseen this outcome. We aimed to surprise the nation with a greater medal count than in previous Commonwealth Games. Gavit and Basil train closely together, sharing similar strengths, which was evident in their final sprint to secure gold and silver," Swami explained.
India's Medal Count on Day 7
The remarkable sprint double was preceded by Murali Sreeshankar's silver in the men's long jump, achieving a distance of 8.09m, marking his second consecutive Commonwealth Games silver. By the end of Day 7, India had amassed a total of 15 medals in Glasgow, comprising three gold, nine silver, and three bronze.
