In a significant development for democracy, India has reached a remarkable milestone of 1 billion registered voters, as revealed by Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar during his visit to Chamba district. Speaking to booth-level officers (BLOs), supervisors, and local voters at a special event at Government Senior Secondary School in Khajjiar, he highlighted the vital importance of voter engagement in reinforcing democratic values.
Encouraging Voter Participation
The Chief Election Commissioner pointed out that approximately 18 million individuals are employed by the Election Commission, which includes 1.2 million booth-level officers who are essential to the electoral framework. He encouraged citizens, particularly the youth, to take an active role in elections and urged voters in Chamba district to aim for a turnout exceeding 90% in upcoming elections.
Engagement with the Community
During the event, Kumar engaged with BLOs and voters from various assembly constituencies, addressing topics such as voter turnout, polling station logistics, and the electoral process. He also conversed with young voters like Pallavi Sharma, Saif Ali, and Sahil, as well as women voters Surendri Devi and Sumna Devi, to gather their insights and experiences regarding voting.
Cultural Appreciation
Following the program, he toured the historic Khaji Nag Temple and its surroundings, expressing admiration for Khajjiar's rich cultural heritage.
A Warm Reception
Earlier, Deputy Commissioner and District Election Officer Mukesh Repswal extended a traditional welcome to the Chief Election Commissioner, presenting him with a Chamba rumal, shawl, and cap. His wife, Mrs. Anuradha Kumar, was also honored with a shawl and cap.
