India Calls for Dialogue Amid Israel-Iran Tensions, Distances from SCO Statement

India's Position on Israel-Iran Relations
On Saturday, India clarified that it did not engage in discussions regarding the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) statement concerning the recent tensions between Israel and Iran. The Ministry of External Affairs emphasized the importance of utilizing diplomatic channels to promote de-escalation. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar had a conversation with his Iranian counterpart the previous day, expressing the international community's significant concern over the escalating situation.
The Ministry's statement reiterated India's previously stated position from June 13, 2025, highlighting the need for dialogue and diplomacy to address the crisis. It urged the international community to take proactive steps towards de-escalation. The External Affairs Minister also conveyed the necessity of avoiding further escalation and returning to diplomatic discussions.
India's overall stance was communicated to other SCO member nations, leading to its decision not to participate in the discussions surrounding the SCO's statement. The SCO condemned the military actions taken by Israel against Iran on June 13, expressing serious concern over the rising tensions in the Middle East.
The SCO's statement condemned aggressive actions targeting civilian infrastructure, which have led to civilian casualties, labeling them as violations of international law and an infringement on Iran's sovereignty. It emphasized the risks these actions pose to regional and global peace.
As a member of the SCO, Iran is supported by the organization in seeking a peaceful resolution to its nuclear program issues. The SCO member states reaffirmed their commitment to international peace and security, deeming any unlawful actions against member states unacceptable.
India had previously expressed its deep concern regarding the developments between Iran and Israel, urging both parties to refrain from escalating tensions. The Ministry of External Affairs stated that India maintains friendly relations with both nations and is prepared to offer support. It also advised Indian nationals in the region to exercise caution and adhere to local security guidelines.
