India Boosts Africa's Ebola Response with New Medical Aid Shipment

New Delhi: On Tuesday, India sent a second batch of medical supplies to the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC). This shipment includes protective equipment, diagnostic tools, medications, and nutritional supplements aimed at enhancing the continent's response to the ongoing Ebola crisis.
The Indian government is optimistic that this 43-ton shipment will significantly improve public health readiness and enhance the capacity to combat Ebola across Africa.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar shared the news on social media platform X, stating, "India has dispatched the second tranche of medical assistance to Africa CDC, comprising protective gear, diagnostic & monitoring equipment, medicines, and supplements. Confident that this 43 tons consignment will further strengthen public health preparedness and bolster Ebola response capacities across Africa."
Previously, on May 24, India had already sent the first batch of essential medical supplies and protective kits to the Africa CDC.
Jaishankar had announced on X, "India dispatched the first tranche of urgent medical supplies and protective kits to Africa CDC today. Committed to supporting Africa in responding to the emerging Ebola public health emergency."

On May 29, India reiterated its commitment to assist affected nations and the Africa CDC in managing the health crisis.
During a weekly media briefing in New Delhi, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal mentioned that the medical supplies were delivered by the Indian High Commissioner in Uganda, Upender Singh Rawat, to the Africa CDC office.
On May 31, the Africa CDC expressed appreciation for the emergency medical aid from India, which supports efforts against the escalating Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), thanking New Delhi for its assistance during this public health emergency.
The World Health Organization declared the ongoing Ebola situation in the region a Public Health Emergency of International Concern on May 17.
Ebola is a severe illness that can be fatal, transmitted through direct contact with infected bodily fluids, contaminated materials, or infected animals. Symptoms include fever, vomiting, diarrhea, and in severe cases, internal and external bleeding.
In recent years, India has increased its medical support to African nations, providing medicines and vaccines, especially during public health emergencies like the COVID-19 pandemic.
