India Becomes the Fifth Largest Military Spender Globally Amid Rising Security Tensions
India's Significant Increase in Defense Spending
In light of escalating global security tensions, India has made a substantial leap in its defense expenditure. According to a recent report by SIPRI, India now ranks as the fifth largest military spender in the world.
How Much Has India's Defense Budget Increased?
The report indicates that India's defense spending reached $92.1 billion in 2025, marking an 8.9% increase compared to 2024.
Key Reasons for Increased Spending
- Tensions with Pakistan in May 2025
- Accelerated procurement of drones and counter-drone systems
- Deployment of advanced air defense systems
- Budget increases of up to 50% for fighter aircraft and other systems
Defense Spending of Neighboring Countries
* Pakistan's defense budget rose by 11% to $11.9 billion, primarily due to expenditures on weapons and missile systems received from China.
Rapid Increase in European Defense Spending
The report also highlights a 14% increase in defense spending across Europe, largely driven by the Russia-Ukraine conflict and the military strengthening of NATO countries.
What This Means for India
India is no longer just an importer of weapons; it is emerging as a formidable regional power. During this period, India's defense exports have also reached record levels, totaling ₹38,424 crore. The rising defense budget clearly indicates that India is modernizing its military capabilities and rapidly preparing to address regional security challenges.
Current Defense Expenditure of India
According to the latest budget, India's defense spending is approximately ₹66.5 lakh crore, which translates to about $758 billion. This accounts for just over 2% of the total GDP.
