New Delhi, June 4: The Border Security Force (BSF) announced that a significant meeting is scheduled between the leaders of India's and Bangladesh's border forces in New Delhi. This meeting will focus on various pressing issues, including assaults on BSF personnel and Indian citizens by individuals from Bangladesh, the prevention of criminal activities crossing the border, and incidents of fence breaches by Bangladeshi nationals.

The 57th bi-annual Director General-level border coordination conference is set to take place at the BSF headquarters on Lodhi Road from June 8 to June 11.

BSF Director General Praveen Kumar will lead the Indian delegation, while the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) will be represented by its DG Maj Gen Mohammad Ashrafuzzaman Siddiqui, as stated by the BSF.

Topics for discussion will include measures to protect BSF personnel and Indian civilians from assaults by Bangladeshi nationals, strategies to combat trans-border crime, and the prevention of criminal entries from Bangladesh. Additionally, the meeting will address incidents of fence breaches and the ongoing construction of border fencing.

Other agenda items will cover actions against Indian insurgent groups operating in Bangladesh, border infrastructure issues, and Confidence Building Measures (CBM), according to the statement.

This meeting is particularly noteworthy as it will be the first since the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) assumed power in Dhaka earlier this year.

The significance of this meeting is underscored by the Modi administration's stance, articulated by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, emphasizing that India will not tolerate illegal immigration from Bangladesh or Rohingya individuals. The government has committed to a systematic approach of 'detect, delete, and deport' for those residing illegally in the country.

India shares a 4,096 km border with Bangladesh, of which approximately 860 km is unfenced, including a 174.51 km stretch deemed 'not feasible for fencing.'

The last meeting between the two nations occurred in Dhaka in August 2025, during a transitional government led by Muhammad Yunus.

Historically, DG-level border discussions were held annually from 1975 to 1992, transitioning to bi-annual meetings in 1993, alternating between New Delhi and Dhaka.

The BSF serves as the primary security and intelligence agency for this border region.
