Progress in India-US Trade Negotiations

New Delhi: Ongoing discussions regarding the anticipated trade agreement between India and the United States are advancing positively, with expectations to finalize an initial segment of the deal prior to July 9, as stated by a senior government official on Monday.

Commerce Secretary Sunil Barthwal informed the media, "We are focused on completing the initial segment, and as you know, there is a deadline (July 9) that we aim to meet before finalizing this part of the agreement."

He noted that teams from both nations are actively visiting each other's countries to facilitate trade discussions.

"We have made two visits to the US, and the US delegation has also visited India twice. Progress is encouraging, and we are optimistic about meeting the deadlines," he remarked.

On April 2, the US implemented an additional 26% reciprocal tariff on Indian imports but has temporarily suspended it for 90 days until July 9. Nevertheless, the existing 10% baseline tariff imposed by the US remains effective.
