India and Jamaica Strengthen Ties: A New Era of Development Cooperation
Strengthening India-Jamaica Relations
Kingston: S. Jaishankar, India's External Affairs Minister, has highlighted the significance of development cooperation in the relationship between India and Jamaica, as both nations seek to explore new opportunities for enhancing bilateral ties.
During a press briefing after his meeting with Jamaican Foreign Minister Kamina J. Smith on Monday, Jaishankar remarked, "Our discussions were thorough and meaningful, covering the full spectrum of India-Jamaica relations. We pinpointed new paths to further solidify our partnership."
He noted that multiple agreements have been signed, focusing on the effective execution of recently established MOUs in areas such as digital transformation, cultural exchange, sports, and digital payments, aiming for tangible results.
Jaishankar emphasized that development cooperation is a crucial aspect of their partnership, celebrating the successful completion of the Improving Rural Livelihoods project in Kingston Town, which was funded by India with a contribution of $1 million through the India-UN Development Partnership Fund via the UN Office for South-South Cooperation.
"This initiative has directly impacted over 200 individuals and positively influenced thousands within the Kingston Town community," he stated.
The minister also mentioned discussions on creating an artisan empowerment hub in Jamaica, reflecting New Delhi's commitment under the India-CARICOM Development Partnership.
He expressed satisfaction with India's assistance in Jamaica's recovery efforts following Hurricane Melissa last year.
Regarding health initiatives, Jaishankar noted the symbolic transfer of one of the consignments of 10 BHISHM Cubes and the ongoing supply of 30 dialysis units to enhance Jamaica's healthcare infrastructure. This follows previous humanitarian aid, including over twenty tonnes of relief materials delivered by the Indian Air Force.
"We dispatched a medical team to enhance local capabilities. These initiatives demonstrate our dedication as a dependable development partner in disaster response. We are also exploring expanded cooperation in various sectors, including defense, healthcare, digitization, agriculture, education, and infrastructure," he added.
Jaishankar's talks with Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness also addressed significant regional and global issues, with both parties reaffirming their commitment to collaboration in multilateral platforms, particularly regarding reformed multilateralism and the priorities of the Global South.
In conclusion, he expressed optimism that the discussions would lead to a stronger, more dynamic, and trust-based partnership.
