Diplomatic Engagements Between India and China

New Delhi: On Wednesday, India emphasized the importance of fostering a conducive atmosphere to enhance its relationship with China. This came during a meeting hosted by Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri with Sun Haiyan, a prominent member of the Communist Party of China (CPC), aimed at discussing initiatives to mend bilateral relations.

Sun, who serves as the vice minister of the CPC's international department, is visiting India to seek avenues for improving ties between the two nations.

In recent months, both countries have taken steps to recalibrate their relationship, which has been under significant strain since the violent confrontations between Indian and Chinese forces in Galwan Valley in June 2020.

The military standoff was effectively resolved by October 2024.

During their discussions, Misri highlighted the necessity of fostering mutual understanding among the citizens of both nations to facilitate the rebuilding of ties. He stressed the need for proactive measures to cultivate a favorable environment for enhanced bilateral relations, as noted in a statement from the external affairs ministry.

The dialogue between Misri and Sun addressed the progress made in stabilizing and revitalizing their relationship, with a focus on business and community-oriented initiatives, as well as plans for further bilateral engagement in 2026.

Both parties reaffirmed their dedication to following through on the significant directives issued by their leaders and to advancing their relationship towards normalization.

In a post shared on 'X', External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal mentioned that both sides assessed the positive developments in their bilateral relations and explored ways to deepen ties through increased people-to-people interactions and addressing sensitive issues.

The Chinese delegation also congratulated India on its role as the BRICS chair and expressed strong support for a successful summit, according to the ministry.
