India and China Engage in Positive Talks on Border Issues

Constructive Discussions on LAC Situation

New Delhi, May 28: Recent discussions between India and China regarding the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh were described as "constructive" and "forward-looking." Both nations acknowledged that ensuring peace along the border is crucial for improving overall bilateral relations.

The meeting, which took place in Beijing, involved the Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination (WMCC) and covered various aspects of the border situation.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the talks were productive, with the Indian delegation led by Sujit Ghosh, the joint secretary for East Asia, and the Chinese side represented by Hou Yanqi, the director general of the Boundary and Oceanic Affairs Department.

Over the past year, India and China have implemented several measures to mend their relationship, which had been severely tested following the violent clashes in Galwan Valley in 2020 and the prolonged military standoff that ensued.

During the meeting, both sides reviewed the current situation along the India-China border and expressed satisfaction with the progress made in maintaining peace, which has facilitated the gradual normalization of their bilateral ties.

Additionally, New Delhi and Beijing agreed to collaborate on preparations for the upcoming meeting of the Special Representatives (SR) scheduled to take place in China.

Last August, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi engaged in a dialogue that yielded several outcomes aimed at preserving peace along the border.

The Indian delegation emphasized the need for an early meeting of the expert-level mechanism concerning trans-border rivers.

Both nations committed to maintaining regular diplomatic and military exchanges through established mechanisms, as agreed upon during the 24th Special Representative talks.
