India Aims for Title Defense in Punjab
The excitement of international hockey returns to Punjab as India gears up to defend its title at the Men's Asian Champions Trophy (ACT) 2026, set to commence in Jalandhar on October 27. The tournament will feature six teams, including Japan, China, Malaysia, South Korea, and Bangladesh, as announced by Hockey India. This event provides the Indian team a chance to showcase their skills in front of local fans in a state renowned for its rich hockey heritage.
Entering the tournament with the momentum of having successfully defended their Asian Games gold medal in Japan, the team, coached by Craig Fulton, aims to extend their record of ACT titles. Captain Harmanpreet Singh, who led the team to consecutive Asian Games victories, will spearhead the squad. India has clinched the Asian Champions Trophy five times, with their latest victory occurring in Hulunbuir, China, where Jugraj Singh netted the winning goal in a 1-0 final.
Team News and Tournament Outlook
Unfortunately, India faces a challenge as former captain and key player Manpreet Singh has been sidelined due to a calf injury, with Vivek Sagar Prasad stepping in as his replacement.
Captain Harmanpreet emphasized the competitive nature of the tournament, stating, "Every team is here to compete and win. We respect all opponents and will approach each match with the same determination."
Malaysia, having finished as runners-up to India at the Asian Games, will be a formidable opponent, with their match against India scheduled for November 1. South Korea, a consistent competitor in Asian hockey, aims to improve upon their fourth-place finish at the Asian Games, while Japan, who finished fifth, seeks to make a strong showing. Bangladesh will kick off their ACT journey against India, hoping to build on their experiences from the Asian Games.

The 2026 edition marks the ninth iteration of the Asian Champions Trophy. The six teams will compete in a single round-robin format, with each team facing the others once. The top four teams will advance to the semi-finals.
