India Aims for SAFF Women's Championship Glory Against Bhutan
India Boosted by Manisha Kalyan's Return
India is set to advance towards reclaiming the SAFF Women's Championship title as they prepare to face Bhutan in the second semi-final at the Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Margao, Goa, on Wednesday. Fans can enter the stadium free of charge.
The five-time champions enter this knockout match with confidence, having topped Group B with a perfect record. Their campaign kicked off with a stunning 11-0 win against the Maldives, followed by a solid 3-0 victory over the defending champions, Bangladesh. A significant boost for the team comes with the return of forward Manisha Kalyan, who joined the squad on Tuesday after being released by her Peruvian club, Alianza Lima, for the June FIFA International Match Window.
Defender Shilky Devi Hemam expressed enthusiasm about Kalyan's arrival, stating, "Her experience will be invaluable for us in the upcoming matches. She plays for a top club, which will also benefit our team."
Favourites on Paper
India enters the match as the clear favourite, currently ranked 69th in the FIFA rankings, while Bhutan sits at 164th. Historically, India has dominated their encounters, winning both previous matches with a staggering aggregate score of 29-0.
The match is scheduled to kick off at 20:00 PM and will be available for live streaming on FanCode. The last meeting between the two teams occurred in the 2012 SAFF Women's Championship, where India secured an 11-0 victory in Colombo. Prior to that, India achieved an incredible 18-0 win over Bhutan in Cox's Bazar, marking their largest victory in an official international match.
Taking Nothing for Granted
Despite their strong track record, India's coach Crispin Chettri is not underestimating Bhutan. The Bhutanese team has made notable strides in recent years, reaching the semi-finals after finishing second in Group A. Following a narrow 1-0 loss to Nepal in their opening match, Bhutan rebounded with an impressive 4-0 victory over Sri Lanka, largely thanks to forward Pema Tshering, who scored a hat-trick and will be a key player for India to monitor closely.
Chettri emphasized the need for his team to stay focused, stating, "We must approach this match with a winning mindset and give our best effort. Bhutan has improved significantly and plays cohesively, attacking and defending as a unit. Quick transitions will be crucial for our success."
Focus on Team Chemistry
The coach also noted that the team is gradually building stronger chemistry. "We are starting to play as a cohesive unit, which was evident against Bangladesh, albeit in patches. There is room for improvement in this area. Our finishing has been effective, and the number of chances we've created reflects our attacking intensity," he added.
Shilky echoed the coach's sentiments, stating, "We are functioning well as a team, which is why our performances have been strong. We have adapted to the ground conditions effectively. Bhutan is a solid team that is improving each year, and their familiarity with each other enhances their gameplay."
Upcoming Matches
In the other semi-final, Nepal will face Bangladesh, with kickoff scheduled for 16:00 on the same day.
