India's Olympic Aspirations

On Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized India's goal of hosting the 2036 Olympics during his address on the 80th Independence Day. He announced a nationwide initiative aimed at discovering sporting talent among children aged five to 15 years.

Speaking from the historic Red Fort, PM Modi highlighted the nation's improving sports performance and its potential as a strong candidate for the Olympic bid. He noted that while the Olympics feature around 40 sports and approximately 325-350 events, India currently does not compete in or qualify for nearly two-thirds of them.

Launch of Talent Hunt Initiative

PM Modi stated that to prepare for the 2036 Olympics, it is crucial to identify and nurture young athletes, particularly those aged five, ten, and fifteen. He announced a talent hunt campaign that will take place in every village, city, and school across the country to scout for sporting talent.

The identified young athletes will receive specialized training to help them excel and represent India at the highest levels of competition. "Their talent will be recognized, and after receiving specialized training, they will be groomed to become outstanding players for our nation," PM Modi remarked.

Recent Success at Commonwealth Games

India recently concluded its campaign at the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow, securing a total of 39 medals, which included 13 gold, 17 silver, and 9 bronze, placing fourth overall.

Despite a limited program that excluded traditional medal-winning events like wrestling, badminton, table tennis, hockey, and shooting, Indian athletes excelled in boxing, judo, weightlifting, and para sports.

Outstanding Performances by Women Athletes

Among the notable achievements, female athletes such as boxers Jaismine Lamboria, Preeti Pawar, Priya Ghanghas, Sakshi Chaudhary, and Arundhati Choudhary, along with weightlifter Mirabai Chanu, judoka Asmita Dey, and para-athlete Sharmila Dhankar, brought home gold medals.

India's boxing team achieved a historic milestone by winning ten medals, marking the best performance ever at the Commonwealth Games, surpassing the previous record of six gold medals held by England and Canada.

The Indian contingent is now gearing up for the upcoming Asian Games, set to take place in Japan's Aichi Prefecture and Nagoya from September 19 to October 4.
