India Achieves Milestone in Digital Health with 250 Million OPD Registrations

Significant Progress in Digital Health Services

New Delhi, August 7 - In a remarkable advancement for digital health services in India, over 250 million outpatient department (OPD) registrations have been completed under the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) through the 'Scan and Register' service. This information was shared by the Union Ministry of Health on Friday. Previously known as 'Scan and Share', the 'Scan and Register' service has transformed the registration process.

The ministry stated that since its launch in October 2022, this service allows patients to easily register for OPD by scanning a QR code digitally, making the process faster and more convenient. This achievement reflects the rapid expansion of citizen-centric digital services under the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission and indicates the growing adoption of digital health solutions based on the Ayushman Bharat Health Account (ABHA) across the country. Patients can utilize any ABDM-enabled Personal Health Record (PHR) application to scan the specific QR code displayed at health institutions.

Upon giving consent, patients can securely share their ABHA profile with health institutions, enabling immediate OPD registration without the need for manual forms or paperwork. The statement highlighted that since its inception, 'Scan and Register' has become one of the most widely adopted digital health services in the country, facilitating easy OPD registration for millions and strengthening digital services in health institutions.

The 'Scan and Register' service is operational across 30,800 health establishments in 36 states and union territories, including 24,323 government health centers and 6,481 private facilities. The rapid expansion of this service in various health institutions showcases the collaborative efforts of the central and state governments, health institutions, and companies providing digital solutions. According to the statement, approximately 400,000 patients are registering for OPD daily through the 'Scan and Register' service, reflecting the increasing trust of citizens in digital health services.

Bihar leads the country in OPD registrations through 'Scan and Register', with over 73 million registrations. Following Bihar are Uttar Pradesh with 40.9 million, Andhra Pradesh with 33.8 million, and Jammu and Kashmir with 13.9 million registrations. Dr. Sunil Kumar Barnwal, CEO of the National Health Authority, remarked that surpassing 250 million OPD registrations through 'Scan and Register' signifies the growing confidence of citizens and healthcare providers in India's digital health system.
