Increased Security Measures in Murshidabad Ahead of Controversial Mosque Ceremony
Heightened Security in Murshidabad
Security has been significantly enhanced in the Murshidabad district of West Bengal. This decision comes in anticipation of a contentious foundation-laying ceremony organized by suspended Trinamool Congress MLA Humayun Kabir. Kabir has announced plans to inaugurate a building named 'Babri Masjid' in Beldanga on Saturday. A local resident, Shafiqul Islam from Uttar Barasat, was seen carrying bricks on his head, stating that his contribution would support the mosque's construction. It is expected that Kabir will be present with around 2,000 volunteers.
Court Directives for Maintaining Peace
The Calcutta High Court, while hearing a public interest petition, instructed the West Bengal government to take all necessary measures to prevent any communal tensions related to this event. A division bench led by Acting Chief Justice Sujoy Paul emphasized the need for the state to maintain law and order strictly and ensure the safety of residents. According to the state’s submissions, multiple layers of security have already been deployed, including 19 companies of the CISF, along with units of the Rapid Action Force and local police spread across Reginagar and nearby areas.
Governor's Call for Calm
West Bengal Governor C.V. Ananda Bose urged the citizens to maintain peace and not be swayed by inflammatory statements or rumors. This appeal was made ahead of the foundation-laying ceremony for the mosque modeled after the Babri Masjid by the suspended MLA. According to a post from the Lok Bhavan on social media platform X, the governor has requested the state government to take all necessary actions to ensure that no disturbances occur and that law and order is upheld. He has also directed the establishment of a 24/7 Access Point Cell at Lok Bhavan, chaired by retired IAS officer S.K. Patnaik.
Public Reporting Mechanism
The post indicated that individuals are encouraged to contact the Lok Bhavan Access Point Cell via phone or email to report any unpleasant incidents, threats, or inflammatory remarks. The governor is committed to monitoring the overall situation and is confident that the state government will take all necessary actions to prevent any threats to law and order.
