Violent Clashes Erupt Over Land Dispute

Security measures have been heightened in Ravindra Nagar, South 24 Parganas, after violent confrontations erupted between two groups over a disputed piece of land outside the local police station. The conflict reportedly began when shops were constructed on encroached land in Ward No. 7 of Maheshtala, part of the Metiabruz assembly constituency. The situation escalated quickly, leading to the throwing of stones and bricks, and a motorcycle was set ablaze. During the clashes, a police officer sustained injuries due to the stone-pelting directed at law enforcement.

Political Reactions to the Violence

In response to the clashes between rioters and police, BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari highlighted that a previous High Court order explicitly stated that communal violence would lead to looting of the public, hinder police action, and result in injuries to officers. He mentioned that he attempted to meet with the Director General of Police (DGP) but was unsuccessful. Reports indicated that the DGP had communicated with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who advised against meeting with Adhikari.

Legal Actions and Future Protests

Adhikari asserted that the same court order indicated that if police fail to act, the court would direct central paramilitary forces to intervene; this order remains valid until July 30. Consequently, they are filing a petition based on this demand and have submitted two stay proposals. He has already emailed the DGP and the Superintendent of Police in Diamond Harbour requesting permission for the Leader of the Opposition and a legislator to meet with the victims. Additionally, the state party president is also attempting to visit the area, and it remains to be seen how the police will respond. Protests organized by Sanatanis are scheduled to take place across various locations in the state starting at 2 PM today.
