Inauguration of the First World Yogasana Championship in Ahmedabad
PM Modi Opens World Yogasana Championship
On Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the commencement of the inaugural World Yogasana Sports Championship in Ahmedabad, emphasizing its potential to redefine Yogasana as a competitive sport. He expressed joy at the widespread adoption of yoga by millions as part of their daily lives.
Through a video conference, PM Modi highlighted that this event adds a significant chapter to the global sports legacy, coinciding with the upcoming World Yoga Day. He stated, "From the historic city of Ahmedabad, we are adding another milestone to the global sports narrative. I warmly welcome athletes from around the world participating in this championship, and I wish them all the best. Hosting this event in a UNESCO World Heritage City is a source of great pride for our nation."
He also mentioned that World Yoga Day is just around the corner, set for June 21st, with major celebrations planned in Kolkata, another historic Indian city. The timing of the championship serves as a 'double dose' of health and wellness, he noted.
Encouragement for Athletes
PM Modi encouraged participants to embrace the spirit of yoga and share its benefits upon returning to their home countries. He stated, "I urge all athletes here to take the message of Yoga back with you. You can become ambassadors of the 'Yoga 365' initiative in your nations. Your experiences and belief in yoga can unite the world under this message. Regardless of the competition's outcome, you are all champions for being part of this historic event."
He added, "Your skills and dedication will inspire youth globally. Congratulations to all participants and organizers of the World Yogasana Championship."
India's Role in Promoting Yoga
The Prime Minister reflected on India's initiative to establish World Yoga Day, aimed at linking this ancient practice with global health and well-being. "Nearly ten years ago, India proposed the observance of an International Day of Yoga to the United Nations, which was supported by 190 countries. It is heartening to see millions incorporating yoga into their daily routines," he remarked.
The Future of Yogasana in Sports
PM Modi noted the growing integration of meditation and Pranayama into daily life, stating, "Every tradition evolves over time. This World Championship marks the beginning of a new era for Yogasana as a competitive sport. I believe that in the future, Yogasana will find its place in international sports events, including the Olympics. The more effort we invest, the greater our achievements will be. This inaugural World Yogasana Championship in Ahmedabad will significantly contribute to that goal."
