Significant Session on Climate Action
Indore hosted a remarkable session titled 'Climate Action for Sustainable Livelihoods' on the third day of the 34th Annual Environmental Dialogue Week 2026, featuring Padma Shri Dr. (Mrs.) Janak Palta McGilligan as the keynote speaker.
The session commenced with a welcoming address by Mr. Varun Raheja, Director of Raheja Solar Food Processing (RSFP). He acknowledged Dr. McGilligan as his internship mentor, crediting her inspiration and guidance in solar energy, sustainable development, and rural entrepreneurship as foundational to the growth of Raheja Solar Food.
Dr. Janak Palta McGilligan highlighted the history of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and World Environment Day. She emphasized the challenges posed by climate change, stating:
“There is no shortage of water; what we lack is effective water management. By managing our available water resources efficiently, we can address many future challenges.”
She urged participants to adopt practical steps such as tree planting, rainwater harvesting, water conservation, energy saving, and utilizing solar energy. Dr. McGilligan stressed that environmental protection begins not with large campaigns but with responsible habits in daily life.
Senior social activist Mr. Virendra Goyal expressed concerns regarding plastic pollution, noise pollution, and other environmental issues. He emphasized the need to reduce single-use plastics and adopt eco-friendly alternatives.
The session conveyed a unanimous message that climate action is no longer solely the responsibility of governments or organizations; it is a collective responsibility of every individual, family, and community. The slogan 'Save the Environment, Save Lives' resonated throughout the event.
Speakers also noted that limited resources and small initiatives could be transformed into significant enterprises through innovation and sustainable thinking, creating new livelihood opportunities while promoting environmental conservation.
This session is part of the 34th Annual Environmental Dialogue Week 2026, running from May 30 to June 5, 2026, aimed at inspiring youth, students, and the general public to actively participate in climate action.
The program concluded with an interactive discussion and a pledge, where all participants committed to integrating environmental protection into their daily routines.
