Rising Oil Prices and Their Effects on India

The ongoing discussions between the US and Iran regarding the crisis in West Asia are beginning to show their impact on India. The price of commercial gas cylinders has surged to ₹994, although the government has managed to maintain stability in the prices of domestic cylinders, petrol, and diesel. Experts suggest that the rising prices of crude oil in the global market will inevitably affect the wallets of ordinary Indians in the long run.

Recent Trends in Crude Oil Prices

Impact of Rising Oil Prices on India Amidst US-Iran Talks

On Thursday, there was a significant increase in crude oil prices in the international market, although a slight decrease was observed today. Nevertheless, Indian oil companies are facing increased pressure as crude oil prices hover around or exceed $100 per barrel.

Impact on Daily Life and Events

For the first time since 2022, crude oil prices surpassed $125 on Thursday. Factors such as the deadlock in West Asia, tensions in the Hormuz Strait, and disappointment over interest rate cuts from the US Federal Reserve have driven oil prices to an all-time high. While there has been a slight easing today, the pressing question remains: what will happen to petrol and diesel prices in India? Oil companies, already under significant strain, may struggle to cope with this surge in crude oil prices. To alleviate some of this pressure, could there be an increase in petrol and diesel prices? Meanwhile, the cost of commercial cylinders has risen sharply, now priced at ₹3071.50 in Delhi. The price of a five-kilogram free trade LPG cylinder has also increased by ₹261, bringing the refill cost for smaller cylinders to ₹813.50. This rise in commercial cylinder prices will likely lead restaurant owners to increase prices for tea, snacks, and meals, and catering for weddings may also become more expensive.

Long-Term Effects of Rising Oil Prices

Indian Oil Corporation has stated that there have been no changes in the retail prices of petrol, diesel, and domestic LPG, ensuring that domestic consumers remain insulated from the recent spikes in international fuel prices. Approximately 33 crore domestic LPG consumers will not see any changes in LPG prices. Additionally, there have been no alterations in the prices of ATF for domestic airlines. Overall, around 80% of petroleum product prices remain unchanged, providing stability for most consumers. However, adjustments have been made to the prices of wholesale and commercial LPG cylinders.

Price Adjustments in Petroleum Products

There has been an increase in wholesale diesel and ATF prices for international airlines. Simultaneously, about 4% of petroleum product prices have decreased, reflecting the dynamic nature of fluctuations in global prices. These measures demonstrate a planned and balanced approach adopted by OMCs under the guidance of the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, aimed at ensuring consumer protection and economic stability while aligning with global market trends.
