Impact of Middle East Conflict on Gujarat's Migrant Workers
Surge of Migrant Workers at Udhna Railway Station
The ongoing conflict in the Middle East is beginning to affect Gujarat, particularly in Surat, where a significant number of migrant laborers have gathered at Udhna railway station. Many are preparing to return to their hometowns due to a severe shortage of LPG. Despite having jobs, numerous workers have reported that they are forced to leave their homes because the lack of cooking gas has made it difficult to sustain themselves.
Workers claim that the price of LPG has skyrocketed to nearly 500 rupees per kilogram, rendering it unaffordable for many. As a result, several individuals have gone days without proper meals.
Personal Accounts from Affected Workers
One worker, Sachin, shared that he has been without gas for several days, and factories are shutting down, halting his income. He mentioned that many laborers are heading back to their villages and plan to return only when conditions improve. Another worker, Seema Devi, expressed her frustration after trying for two weeks to obtain gas without success. Lacking money and cooking fuel, she decided to return to her village with her daughter, while other family members stayed behind.
The workers also noted their inability to use alternative cooking methods, as landlords have prohibited the burning of wood in rented rooms. Many expressed hope to return once gas supplies normalize, but their sudden departure has led to a labor shortage in Surat's textile industry.
Government Response and Relief Measures
Meanwhile, the government is engaging with global partners to ensure energy security in the Gulf region and the safety of Indian citizens. A relief package of 497 crore rupees has been announced to assist exporters affected by disruptions caused by the conflict.
Officials have acknowledged that the global situation remains challenging, but efforts to stabilize supply are ongoing. Notably, two Indian LPG carriers recently navigated the Strait of Hormuz safely, providing some relief amid the crisis.
