LPG Shortage Disrupts Hospitality in Meghalaya

Shillong, March 26: The tourism industry in Meghalaya is facing challenges due to a shortage of commercial LPG, which has led many hotels and restaurants to limit their menus and services, as reported by officials on Wednesday. The available LPG supplies are being allocated primarily to essential services, including hospitals and hostels, causing significant disruptions in the hospitality sector.

Owners of hotels and resorts, especially in popular tourist destinations like Shillong and Sohra, have indicated that they are compelled to reduce their operations and adopt alternative cooking methods.

One resort owner in Sohra announced on social media, “Starting tomorrow, we will be using firewood and charcoal for slow cooking. We appreciate your understanding regarding longer wait times and a limited selection of local dishes.”

Industry representatives noted that the LPG shortage has hindered regular kitchen functions, preventing many establishments from providing their full range of menu items due to insufficient fuel.

Officials have reiterated that essential services are the top priority and are working to improve the supply situation.

In the previous year, Meghalaya welcomed over 1.6 million tourists.
