JNU Issues Advisory Amid Protests at Jantar Mantar

New Delhi, July 24: Following the University of Delhi's lead, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has released an advisory urging students and other members of the community to avoid visiting Jantar Mantar, where the Cockroach Janta Party is protesting against the NEET paper leak and related issues.
In a notice issued on Friday, the university called on its academic community to act with caution and prioritize their safety.
“All members of JNU’s academic community are advised to act responsibly and prioritize their personal safety. In line with the Supreme Court of India’s directives regarding public demonstrations, you are requested to avoid participating in or visiting gatherings at or near Jantar Mantar, New Delhi,” the advisory read.
The university also warned students about their behavior on social media, indicating that any violations could lead to legal and disciplinary repercussions.
“Please be responsible on social media. Violations may result in legal consequences under relevant laws as well as disciplinary actions under the University’s code of conduct,” the statement emphasized.
Additionally, it encouraged students and staff to embody the principles of responsible citizenship, stating, “You are also encouraged to uphold the values of academic responsibility and responsible citizenship.”
This advisory followed a similar notice from Delhi University, which urged its students and faculty to steer clear of demonstrations at Jantar Mantar due to potential safety and legal risks.
In its statement on Thursday, DU reaffirmed that the safety and well-being of students is its top priority and cautioned against involvement in unlawful assemblies or protests.
“Dear students and faculty, your safety is important to us,” the advisory stated, noting that gatherings at Jantar Mantar are subject to regulations and restrictions as per the Supreme Court of India’s directives.
The advisories from both universities were issued amid ongoing protests at Jantar Mantar, where demonstrators are calling for the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, despite activist Sonam Wangchuk concluding his 26-day hunger strike.
