Dharamshala: On Saturday, Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, the Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh, announced that a professor implicated in a video statement by a deceased student from Government College-Dharamshala will be suspended without delay. This declaration was made during an informal press interaction in Kandaghat, located in the Solan district.
CM Sukhu emphasized the seriousness of the situation, stating that a thorough investigation has been ordered. He assured that anyone found culpable would face the most stringent consequences, asserting that the government would not exhibit any leniency.
The incident has also captured the attention of the University Grants Commission (UGC), which has established a fact-finding committee to look into the events leading to the student's death. A senior official from the UGC confirmed that they have taken notice of the case and requested the committee to expedite its report.
Describing the situation as “deeply distressing,” the UGC highlighted the importance of student safety and declared that any negligence in this matter would be unacceptable. They promised the grieving family that those responsible would be held accountable.
In the meantime, claims that the student faced harassment involving caste-based slurs have led the Himachal Pradesh Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Commission to request a report from law enforcement. Additionally, the State Women’s Commission has also acknowledged the case, with its chairperson, Vidya Negi, directing the Kangra Superintendent of Police to provide a comprehensive report.
