IMD Weather Update: Heavy Rainfall and Thunderstorms Expected Across India

IMD Weather LIVE Updates: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has released weather warnings for various regions nationwide, indicating widespread rainfall, thunderstorms, and strong winds impacting both southern and northern states. The Southwest Monsoon is actively influencing the subcontinent, with its Northern Limit now reaching significant areas such as Mumbai, Pune, Kalaburagi, Mahbubnagar, and Agartala.
Heavy to extremely heavy rainfall is anticipated in Kerala, Mahe, Coastal Karnataka, and South Interior Karnataka, with isolated areas in Kerala likely to experience exceptionally heavy downpours. Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal are also forecasted to receive substantial rainfall, along with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds that could reach speeds of 40–50 km/h. A thundersquall with wind speeds of 50–60 km/h, potentially gusting up to 70 km/h, is expected over South Interior Karnataka.
The IMD has projected that the Southwest monsoon rainfall across India will be 106 percent of the Long Period Average, an increase from the 105 percent forecast made in April. The Long Period Average rainfall for India stands at 868.6 mm. The IMD indicated that above-normal rainfall is highly likely throughout the country during the monsoon season, which spans from June to September 2025.
