Weather Forecast for Northwest India

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a forecast indicating a shift in weather conditions across northwest India. The arrival of a western disturbance along with easterly winds is expected to improve the heatwave situation over the next three days. Additionally, warnings for thunderstorms, strong winds, and hail have been issued for several regions. According to the IMD, the maximum temperatures, which have been hovering around 45 degrees Celsius or higher, are likely to drop significantly between May 28 and May 30, providing relief to many northern and central states.

Expert Insights on Temperature Drop

In a conversation with a news agency on Thursday, IMD scientist Akhil Srivastava mentioned that maximum temperatures in northwest India have predominantly remained at or above 45 degrees Celsius. He stated that their forecast suggests that due to the influence of the western disturbance and the arrival of easterly winds in the plains of northwest India, there is a likelihood of thunderstorms in the western Himalayan region and the surrounding plains.

Srivastava further noted that a significant drop in temperatures is anticipated in the coming days. He indicated that between May 28 and May 30, maximum temperatures could decrease by 5 to 8 degrees Celsius, with some isolated areas experiencing drops of up to 10 degrees Celsius. This change is expected to bring considerable relief from the ongoing heatwave in regions such as Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh.

Warnings for Severe Weather Conditions

However, the meteorological department has also issued warnings regarding intense weather activities, including strong winds and thunderstorms. Srivastava cautioned that wind speeds in Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and nearby areas could be quite high, reaching between 60 to 70 kilometers per hour, with the potential to escalate to 80 kilometers per hour. He also warned that some parts of Uttar Pradesh might experience even stronger winds.
