The Indian Institute of Technology Mandi marked its 17th Foundation Day, emphasizing its commitment to innovation, research excellence, and its pivotal role in nation-building through advanced technologies.


The event gathered prominent figures from academia, industry, and international research institutions, highlighting the critical role of artificial intelligence, robotics, and emerging technologies in shaping the future of India.


Research Focus and Expansion Plans


Director Laxmidhar Behera highlighted the institute's research achievements, noting that IIT Mandi has secured over ₹120 crore in research funding over the last three years. He also announced a significant ₹700 crore investment aimed at enhancing infrastructure, positioning the institute as a global leader in cutting-edge research.


Behera emphasized the institution's evolution into a research-intensive university, concentrating on fields such as quantum technology, semiconductor systems, artificial intelligence, and interdisciplinary engineering.

The celebration featured esteemed guests, including Kris Gopalakrishnan, Co-Founder of Infosys, as the Chief Guest, and Oussama Khatib, Director of the Stanford Robotics Lab, as a Distinguished Guest.


In his keynote speech, Gopalakrishnan characterized the upcoming decades as crucial for India's global leadership in innovation. He asserted that institutions like IIT Mandi are essential in cultivating a 'product nation' by nurturing talent, promoting translational research, and encouraging entrepreneurship.
