Her coach, Francisco Roig, reportedly confronted a supporter in her box during the match against China's Qinwen Zheng at Arthur Ashe Stadium on September 7.
Swiatek's ambition to secure her second US Open title and seventh Grand Slam ended abruptly with a 7-5, 6-3 loss. Despite starting strong with a 5-0 lead in the first set, she witnessed Zheng's remarkable comeback, winning seven consecutive games to clinch the set.
In the second set, Zheng maintained her focus and capitalized on Swiatek's increasing mistakes, ultimately securing a straight-sets victory and advancing to the quarterfinals.
Controversy in the Coaching Box
The incident involving Swiatek's coaching box became a focal point of discussion as her defeat unfolded. A fan named Robert Spencer shared a video on Instagram capturing Roig's reaction as he gestured for him to stop cheering during the match.
In the clip, as Swiatek prepared to serve, Spencer shouted encouragement, saying, 'You’ve got this, Iga, let’s go.' This prompted an annoyed response from Roig, who turned to address the fan, who was seated directly behind the coaching area, before returning his attention to Swiatek's performance.
Spencer captioned the video, expressing confusion over Roig's reaction: 'Yesterday @iga.swiatek’s coach got mad at me for cheering for Iga. Can someone explain what I did wrong?'
Swiatek Reflects on the Match
After her unexpected loss to Zheng, Swiatek addressed the media, acknowledging that losing a significant lead is part of the sport. When asked how she would process the experience of losing a 5-0 advantage, she downplayed the situation.
'It's just one match... You can lose a set from any score; nothing special about that. Just that's what happened, and that's it,' she stated, emphasizing her intention to continue playing her usual game.
This season has been challenging for Swiatek, as she has only secured one title and has not progressed to the semifinals in any of the four Grand Slam tournaments, marking the first year since 2021 without a Major title.
